The easiest way to make a TNT Cannon is shown below:
Place TNT where the water is, but not on the source block. Also, place a TNT on top of the slab.
To fire this cannon, light the nearest two TNT blocks, then a few seconds later, light the last.
This cannon fires about 12 blocks.
A more advanced TNT cannon, that is automated with redstone:
Place the TNT as so:
Note that the length of this model cannot exceed 9 blocks from the source block of water to the half-slab, because water flows 8 blocks.
Also note that the two last repeaters are set at 4 ticks. This is very necessary for this cannon to work.
This cannon fires up to about 72 blocks, a rather large distance.
(You may remove the cobblestone above the last TNT. This will cause the TNT to fly higher, but not as far.)
